Reflections 2019

Welcome to "Reflections 2019," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. These images may be new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, workshops, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

Volume 6: "Gems from the Archives"

August 2019

While rooting through my archives recently, I came upon some slides I created about 30 years ago for a media presentation on the properties of quartz crystals. I decided to have the slides digitized. This was my first experience with the digital transfer process and while I'm not completely pleased with the results, I thought I would share a few of them.

My original goal for the project was to have the crystals appear to be self-illuminated - as if glowing from within.  First I created a black box surround - sort of a mini studio in which to stage the crystals.

I set some of the specimens on a pedestal that had a small light within it. This allowed them to be lit from below, producing an inner glow.

With others, I directed a small beam of light onto the crystal, sometimes through a prism, which created a rainbow effect. Added the star filter for extra effect.

Some specimens had interesting filaments or hazy areas where gases or other impurities were caught within the crystal as it was forming.

It was a time-consuming, but fun challenge.

Thank you...
