Reflections 2019

Welcome to "Reflections 2019," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. These images may be new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, workshops, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

Volume 5: "Photo Impressionism"

June 2019

As evidenced in my "Speed of Light" portfolios, I often incorporate some of the hallmarks of Impressionism in my photography.  Very simply summarized (Wikipedia), distinctive characteristics of impressionist art are:

  • emphasizing changing qualities in a scene
  • accentuating the passage of time
  • including movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience.

The intention is to capture a feeling or experience rather than an accurate depiction.

"The Grove"

In this oak and eucalytus grove, the experience of the wind in the trees was my "subject:" the sights and sounds of the leaves rustling and branches swaying...the shrill whistle of air passing between solid tree trunks.

At the seashore,  the receding waves rushed out in a "whoosh," making patterns of the variegated sand with its turbulence.

You can view more of my impressionistic work in the following "Speed of Light" galleries:
