Reflections 2017

Welcome to "Reflections 2017," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. The images may be from a photography workshop, new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, movies, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary subject or moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

April 9, 2017   Sand and Stone

Two early Spring photo excursions led me on a geological exploration of sorts. A visit to Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach presented an opportunity to study the structure and texture of tiny, loose pieces of rock blown into fantastical natural forms. That was followed by a tour of the turn-of-the-20th-century Lightstation at Point Sur. The lightstation sits dramatically atop a large volcanic rock some 360 feet above the surf.  Impacted by extreme coastal wind and weather conditions, the rock is in active, pronounced stages of fragmentation and erosion. While viewing the images from these outings, I found visual contrasts and similarities that create a striking photographic comparison of rock in various "states of being."

March 11, 2017   Clouds, a Metaphor

It was an epic winter for clouds this year. While exploring them through the viewfinder, my thoughts often wandered to Joni Mitchell's lyrics for "Both Sides Now."  A bit of a cliché, I suppose, but the vaporous nature of clouds so easily lends itself metaphorically to the ever-changing illusions of life.  A few illustrated verses from the song below.

Rows and flows of angel hair

And ice cream castles in the air

And feathered canyons everywhere

I've looked at clouds that way.

But now they only block the sun

They rain and they snow on everyone

So many things I would have done

But clouds got in my way

I've looked at clouds from both sides now

From up and down, and still somehow

It's cloud illusions I recall

I really don't know clouds at all

I've looked at life from both sides now

From up and down, and still somehow

It's life's illusions I recall

I really don't know life at all

Thank you...
