Reflections 2017

Welcome to "Reflections 2017," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. The images may be from a photography workshop, new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, movies, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary subject or moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

June 17, 2017   Transcendance

This month, I'm pleased to share a few images from my new "Transcendance" portfolio. These photos integrate imagery from the Trance Dance experience and from Shamanistic tribal rituals, suggesting these are similar, intersecting paths. Two framed pieces from this collection will be featured in the upcoming "FotoSàga Dreams" exhibition, July 1 - 25 at Carmel Visual Arts, The Barnyard, Carmel, CA.

"Spin"

Through the ages, spiritual dancing has been embraced by cultures across the globe as a means to transcend our physical dimensions and connect with the Spirit world.

"Voyage"

Intuitive body movement and controlled breathing take the dancer on an inner voyage to at state of "trance," beyond our normal perception of space / time.

In this state of consciousness, past, present, and future converge and a deeper, "evolutionary self" can emerge.

"Flight"

For the Shaman, the soul lives forever. Spirit and ancestry are one - an eternally evolving line of genetic connection and wisdom. To symbolize this connection, some native tribes don ritualistic masks during social and religious ceremonies.

"Reach"

"Break on Through"

The mask becomes an instrument of communication with the spirit of their ancestors... a link that brings the past into the present.

*****

In memory of my Mother who, along with her mask collection, was the inspiration for this work.

Thank you...

... for taking time to reflect on my work.  A larger sampling of these images will soon be posted in a new "Transcendance" Portfolio here on the web site.  Meantime, check out the new work posted in the "Speed of Light" and "Flora" Galleries.  And, if you're in the Monterey area during July, stop by and enjoy the "FotoSàga Dreams" Exhibition

May 20, 2017   Ti: The Good Luck Plant

Among the abundance of Maui's vibrant tropical flora, it was the large, luminous leaves of the Ti plant that stole the spotlight on my recent island retreat.

Ti (classification: Cordyline)

While cultivated as a houseplant in the States, Ti (pronounced like tea) grows wild in the South Pacific.

The Good Luck Plant

Introduced to Hawaii by early Polynesian settlers, Ti was considered to have great spiritual power - its leaves worn only by the Kahuna (high priests). To this day, the Ti plant is thought to bring good luck.

Photographing the various species of Ti became an exercise in seeing Light, rather than objects.

Directional lighting from the side or behind the foliage creates lines, forms, and textures.

Shadow forms within layers of unfolding leaves... highlighted edges add linear detail... backlit veins reveal structure and texture.
