Mindful Reminiscence Statement

As a photographer, I am most passionate about landscape and nature as subject matter. As the health of our planet deteriorates with the impacts of climate change, I have come to feel nostalgic about our scenic natural beauty, even as I view it through my lens. There is actually a term for this condition: Solastalgia, a form of eco-anxiety caused by environmental change… kind of like “pre-traumatic stress” based on a sense of loss that the planet we think we live on no longer exists.

The photographs in my Mindful Reminiscence portfolio present nature in the context of this “solastalgic” mindset. Will future generations experience the beauty and inspiration that nature provides? Or will the natural world of today gradually become a faded memory of the past? The vintage treatment of these images portrays the here-and-now as if it is time gone by. I’m being mindful (in the moment) and at the same time, reflecting on the present as if it is past.

Sepia stained images with yellowed borders, are suggestive of faded Polaroids. Scratched, vignetted rocks and filmy seascapes harken back to the subtle autochromes of the early 20thcentury, predecessors to Kodachrome color. Along with their dreamy feeling of nostalgia, there is a timeless quality to them. Scenes captured by artists for centuries continue to be the muse for creation of new works of art. This brings hope for the resilience of nature and that our human impacts can be reversed. Do we have the resolve to make change happen?
