Reflections 2017

Welcome to "Reflections 2017," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. The images may be from a photography workshop, new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, movies, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary subject or moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

August 6, 2017   Screen of Perception

With eyes closed, it is not black that I see, but a screen composed of tiny pixels of multi-colored light. On opening my eyes, the screen remains - as if the incoming light and corresponding images are projected onto it...  a screen of perception.

The process of visual perception fascinates me; external light vibrations stimulate the retina, which transforms them to neural activity that is transmitted to the brain. There we use memory, emotion, and intuition to create a mental representation of the "outside" material world of space, time, and matter - our reality.

I've been exploring this concept in a series of images using physical screens as a metaphor for the screen of perception.

Where to focus?  Focusing on the screen itself gives one perspective... while the focus on any plane in the space beyond creates others.

Areas of bright light break up and distort sections of the screen with interesting effects... like looking directly into the sun creates a residual image that temporarily distorts our vision.

Which image is your favorite?

I'd love to hear your thoughts... it's quick and easy to send a note via my Contact Form.

As always, I thank you for taking time to reflect on my work.

July 9, 2017   State of Vacancy

“Outlands” was the name given to the Flanders Estate by its original owners in 1925 – a name befitting its solitary, wooded location in Hatton Fields. On the Register of Historic Places, the mansion is currently owned by the city of Carmel, CA. Unoccupied for a number of years, there is a mixed ambiance about the place. The history of its past grandeur and elegance is transposed against Nature’s tendency to overcome and take back.

On the evening of my visit, the overcast sky made for an extended dusk... like the sun and the moon were conspiring on the quality of light.

I wandered about the property, exploring the unique architectural details and the minimally maintained landscape.

Peering through the windows from outside, the forested grounds were reflected over the vacant interior, capturing the moody ambiance in a somewhat ghostly and dreamlike way... Outlands in a State of Vacancy.

A framed image from this portfolio will be on display in the upcoming 2017 Members' Juried Exhibition at the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel. The opening reception is on Saturday, July 22, 5:00-7:00pm and the exhibit runs through September 3rd.

Thank you...
